Marble and limestone is considered softer and more susceptible to staining than granites and thus less suited to kitchens and other areas of high traffic and use. Nevertheless its beauty and the plethora of choices make it incredibly popular with discerning designers and others with an appreciation of the material.
Occasionally slate is also used as a worksurface, though easily marked its quick to take on a patina and mature into its surroundings, which can be a desirable trait in some designs.
